It’s the convergence of everything I love: human connection, storytelling, and a little bit of beautiful chaos. I come from a journalism background, so I’m trained to be drawn to the unscripted. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it tenderness. Weddings pull me in because I believe in legacy. I believe in nuance. And I believe that love, in its rawest form, deserves to be seen and remembered for what it really is, and for how it really felt.
My greatest hope is that they forget I was ever there. When they are old and grey, I don’t want them to remember my name, or what I look like. Not out of modesty, but because the photos feel so true and so deeply theirs. I want their memories to take center stage, like the images didn’t have any influence of a photographer at all. Just moments that are completely full of feeling, and wholly joyful.
Cinema, especially Old Hollywood cinema. One of my favorite photographers, Bob Willoughby, quietly documented behind the scenes moments of old films starring Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and other Hollywood stars of the day. His images of the actors’ candid moments reminds me a lot of the life that happens inside the margins of the production. That idea sticks with me, and I like to approach weddings the same way! So much life has been lived before this one day, and I strive to catch the life that was lived before then. My journalistic background helps me ask couples the right questions and helps me to break down walls, so I can capture those moments on camera naturally.
First dances, especially if they are choreographed. Catching stray tears on guests during the ceremony and toasts. Private vows, if you decide to have them.
Honestly, if I could book weddings in Manhattan and Brooklyn for the rest of my career, I’d be ridiculously happy. My soul is here – even since I was a kid, my grandmother says I always wanted to be a “New Yorker.”
